Paints, Coatings & Environmental Rules

Paint is a protective coating system as well as a decorative finish. Students should understand how binders, pigments, solvents or water, additives and substrate preparation work together to produce performance.

Common coating families

  • Waterborne acrylic and latex coatings: widely used on many interior and exterior architectural surfaces; product suitability varies by substrate and exposure.
  • Alkyd and other solventborne coatings: used where specified for certain trim, metal or maintenance applications; observe ventilation, fire and handling precautions.
  • Primers and sealers: selected to improve adhesion, seal porous materials, block stains or address specific substrate conditions.
  • Epoxy and urethane systems: used in certain demanding floor, industrial or protective applications; surface preparation, mixing, pot life and PPE requirements are product-specific.
  • Masonry and specialty coatings: formulated for particular mineral substrates and exposure conditions.

Read the technical data sheet

Before specifying or applying a product, review its technical data sheet for approved substrates, surface preparation, mixing, thinning restrictions, application tools, coverage, wet- and dry-film thickness, temperature limits, drying and recoat times, cure time and cleanup. Read the SDS for hazards, handling, storage and emergency information.

VOC basics and Southern California

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted by some coating ingredients and solvents. Regulatory limits depend on the coating category and the air district where the product is sold or used. In the South Coast Air Quality Management District, Rule 1113 sets VOC limits for architectural coatings. Do not rely only on a broad “low VOC” claim; verify the exact product category and current rule requirements.

How to compare products

  • Is the product approved for the substrate and exposure?
  • Does the primer match the substrate and finish system?
  • What surface preparation and moisture limits apply?
  • What are the required film thickness and number of coats?
  • What are the VOC category and applicable local limit?
  • What ventilation, PPE, storage and disposal controls are required?
  • What maintenance interval and expected service conditions are stated?

Regulations and product formulations change. Confirm current requirements with the relevant air district and the coating manufacturer before purchase or application.
