Jobsite Safety & Lead-Safe Painting
Painting work can expose workers to falls, airborne dust, vapors, chemicals, noise, electrical hazards and ergonomic strain. Plan the work before opening a container or disturbing an existing coating.
Start with a hazard assessment
- Review the job hazard analysis, product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Identify ventilation needs, ignition sources, nearby occupants and restricted areas.
- Select PPE based on the hazards and applicable requirements; ensure it fits and is used correctly.
- Plan safe access using suitable ladders, scaffolds or lifts and inspect equipment before use.
- Keep work areas orderly and provide appropriate handwashing and cleanup facilities.
Respiratory and chemical protection
Do not choose a respirator by guesswork. Respirator selection, medical evaluation, fit testing, training and a written program may be required depending on the exposure and applicable standard. Gloves, eye protection and protective clothing must be compatible with the materials and task. Follow the SDS, label and employer safety program.
Lead-safe renovation
Renovation, repair or painting that disturbs painted surfaces in covered pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities may be subject to the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. Requirements can include firm certification, trained renovators, pre-renovation education, containment, prohibited-practice controls, specialized cleaning and records. The exact applicability depends on the building, activity and exemptions; verify before work begins.
EPA’s lead-safe guidance and small-entity compliance guide were updated in March 2026. Review the current official materials:

Falls, ladders and access
Use the correct access equipment for the height, duration and work conditions. Set ladders on stable surfaces, maintain proper setup, avoid overreaching and keep access areas clear. Scaffolds and aerial lifts require appropriate training, inspection and fall protection as applicable. Follow the site safety plan and OSHA construction requirements.

Student safety checklist
- Have hazards been identified and controls selected?
- Have labels and SDS documents been reviewed?
- Is the work area ventilated and controlled?
- Is access equipment inspected and appropriate?
- Has old paint been assessed before disturbance?
- Are cleanup, waste handling and emergency procedures understood?
